What is a root canal?
A root canal is a treatment that saves a tooth when the pulp inside it, the soft tissue that holds its nerve and blood vessels, becomes badly infected or damaged. The dentist removes the infected tissue, cleans and disinfects the canals inside the roots, and then seals them so bacteria cannot return.
At Harmony Dental Care in West Covina, root canal therapy is part of our routine care. Dr. Nguyen and Dr. Khaef both treat root canal cases, and our team has training in endodontics, the branch of dentistry that focuses on the inside of the tooth. Most patients who come to us are looking for relief from tooth pain, and many are surprised by how much more comfortable the process is than they expected.
In most cases, saving your natural tooth is the better choice compared with pulling it. A natural tooth helps you chew, keeps the jawbone in place, and helps your other teeth stay where they belong. Replacing a lost tooth usually involves more visits and more work.
Who needs a root canal?
You may need a root canal if your tooth has deep decay, a crack, or repeated dental work that has led to infection. Your dentist will decide based on an exam and X-rays, not on symptoms alone.
Common signs of a tooth that needs root canal treatment
- Severe or lingering toothache
- Sensitivity to hot or cold that stays after the hot or cold is removed
- A tooth that has darkened or changed color
- Swelling or tenderness in the gums near the tooth
- A small pimple on the gums that keeps coming back
- Pain when you bite down or touch the tooth
Some teeth that need treatment show no symptoms at all. These are often found on a routine X-ray during a regular checkup, which is one reason we recommend keeping up with exams.

What to expect during a root canal
The visit follows a clear set of steps, and your dentist will explain each one before starting.
- Numbing. Dr. Khaef or Dr. Nguyen numbs the area with local anesthesia. We also use a numbing gel, so you feel comfortable before the injection.
- Opening the tooth. A small access opening is made in the crown of the tooth, the visible part above the gum.
- Removing the infected tissue. The infected or inflamed pulp is carefully removed with specialized instruments.
- Cleaning and shaping. The canals are cleaned, shaped, and disinfected. We use rotary endodontic files and digital imaging to work through the root canals with precision.
- Filling and sealing. The canals are filled with gutta-percha, a biocompatible material, and sealed.
- Restoring the tooth. In most cases, a dental crown is placed over the treated tooth. This protects it and helps it work like a natural tooth again.
Many patients find the appointment less stressful than they expected. We offer warm blankets and noise-canceling headphones to help you relax during treatment. Tell your dentist if you feel anything during the procedure, and they can add more numbing.
Digital imaging and 3D technology
At Harmony Dental Care, we use 3D digital X-rays, 3D scanners, and digital impressions to map the canals inside your tooth. This helps us see the shape of the roots and clean them thoroughly before sealing. We also use 3D CBCT imaging when a closer look is needed.
Root canal re-treatment
Some teeth that had a root canal years ago develop a new infection. In that case, the dentist may recommend re-treatment. This involves removing the old filling material, cleaning the canals again, and resealing the tooth.
Re-treatment is more complex than a first root canal, and it has a lower success rate in general. For this reason, we review each re-treatment case individually. We use advanced 3D imaging to check whether the tooth can be saved with a reasonable chance of long-term success, and we will talk through all of your options openly, including the alternatives.
How much does a root canal and crown cost in West Covina?
The cost depends on several factors, including which tooth is being treated and whether it is a first treatment or a re-treatment. Molars have more roots and canals than front teeth, so they are often more involved. A crown is usually placed after the root canal, and that cost is separate from the root canal itself. We cannot give you a single price for every patient, but we can review your exam, X-rays, and treatment plan with you before any work begins.
Our $59 New Patient Special
New patients without insurance can book our $59 New Patient Special. It includes a comprehensive exam, digital X-rays, and a professional cleaning. This visit lets your dentist check the tooth and recommend a plan, so you know your options before deciding on a root canal or crown.
Does insurance cover a root canal?
Insurance coverage depends on your specific plan, your benefits, and your dental plan’s rules. Many dental plans cover part of root canal treatment, but the amount varies. Because of this, we do not promise what your plan will pay until we have checked it.
Harmony Dental Care accepts PPO and indemnity plans, along with Medi-Cal, Denti-Cal, Smile California, CalOptima, and most major dental insurance plans. Our team works directly with many dental insurers and helps you understand your benefits before your visit. We also offer a complimentary insurance eligibility check. Call us at (626) 858-3305 to request it.
Payment and financing options
If you do not have insurance, or your plan covers only part of the treatment, we offer flexible financing with affordable monthly payment plans for elective and major procedures. Ask about these options during your visit.
Recovery and aftercare
Most patients go back to their normal routine the same day. Your tooth may feel tender for a few days, especially when you bite down. Your dentist will give you written instructions for managing discomfort, eating, and brushing around the treated tooth. Follow those instructions closely.
The crown is an important part of your recovery. It protects the tooth from cracking and helps it function like a natural tooth. Keep your crown appointment, because a treated tooth without a crown can be more fragile over time.
Call us if you have swelling that gets worse, a fever, or pain that does not improve as expected. Your dentist will decide whether you need another visit.

How much does a root canal cost in West Covina?
